Notes
Data prepared by Master Thorvald Grimsson. Routes are optimized for fastest travel times by computer using Scheme (a variant of Lisp). The program also generates all of the HTML for the chart.
If you hover over a RouteOrigin -> Midpoint(s) -> Destination link with your mouse pointer, you should see a popup tooltip showing the fastest route found.
If you click one of the RouteParis -> Rome links, the fastest route should be displayed by Google Maps in a new window. The routes picked by Google Maps do not always match the ones picked by the program.
The author regularly travels about 4 mph (8 km/h) over the posted limit using cruise control, takes minimal gas and bathroom breaks, takes meals that can be eaten while driving, and avoids rush hours.
Travel times are based on a 50 mph (80 km/h) average speed on most roads, and a 60-70 mph (95-115) average speed on divided highways. The majority of the times in this chart were personally verified by the author during the period 1985 to 2005.
Check these times against a few of your own favourite routes, and decide if you drive on average 20% faster or 10% slower than the author. Adjust all other times proportionately. Add extra time for meal breaks, children, heavy traffic, construction, weather, or delays at the international border.
Routes involving ferries already have times ranging from 2:00 to 2:30 added to adjust for the ferry.
